Julia Shaw is lecturer in South Asian Archaeology at the Institute of Archaeology, University College London. She holds a Ph.D. from Cambridge University and has held previous appointments at Oxford and Stanford. Shaw is a specialist in the archaeology of early Buddhism, irrigation and water management, theories of social and religious change, and survey archaeology in respect to South Asia. She has directed the Sanchi Survey Project since 1998, is an editor of the Routledge journal World Archaeology, and author of numerous scholarly articles. Shaw is a 2014-15 British Academy Mid-Career Fellow working on the project, Buddhist economics and environmental ethics in ancient India.
